Commissioned by Adult Social Services, our Support team provides practical, person-centred support and advice for Newham residents living with dementia (or awaiting a diagnosis) and their carers and family, peer support and group sessions to enhance wellbeing and live well with dementia. The Services support people in the earlier stages of dementia:
· When memory problems have prompted you and/or your carer/family to approach your GP with concerns
· When you learn that the condition is dementia
· When you want to learn more about the disease, and options for treatment and care, self-management and support
· When you need the right help at the right time to live well with dementia, and prevent crises
Information and advice service
We can provide the right information and support you need to understand the signs and symptoms of dementia, and to know what support is available, and how to access it through:
- Fact sheets
- Telephone advice and support
- Face to face support, by visiting you at home, or at community locations
- Ongoing advice, as you need it
- Casework, signposting and referrals
The Dementia Advisor can communicate in several South Asian community languages.
Group sessions
We organise two Music for the Mind sessions, and two Memory Cafe sessions each month at various venues in Newham. The sessions are free but participants are welcome to make a donation to cover refreshments.
Memory Cafes provide a relaxed environment where people with dementia and their carers can meet and gain peer support, information and advice, and join in activities which will enhance their wellbeing.
Music for the Mind sessions use music to bring people together in a stimulating environment to express themselves and socialise to enhance wellbeing.
