Creative Arts on Prescription with Corn Exchange Newbury 

Corn Exchange Newbury is an arts centre in the centre of Newbury, West Berkshire.  As a theatre we offer a varied programe of performing arts events accessible to everyone, alongside which we also run a flourishing interactive participation programme engaging and supporting the community in arts activities of all shapes and sizes.

We welcome referrals into a variety of courses and classes across a range of creative activities. Here is what's on offer: 

Courses and classes 

These are taught courses and classes generally open to the general public, which offer opportunities to learn or develop skills across a variety of art forms. Courses may include visual arts such as our Afternoon Art classes, movement sessions such as Toddler dance, or drama such as our Adult Theatre skills sessions. Classes are led by professioanl artists and open to a range of participant ages and skills levels. Sessions are listed on our  website . We are happy to discuss referral into these public sessions. Creative Referral  Programme

Our referral programmes are tailored courses designed to support community groups or individuals in dealing with challenges in mental health, self confidence, lonliness or isolation through engagment in creative activities in a safe and supported environment. Sessions are developed in consultation with community groups and local health and communtity practitioners to provide a non medical pathway to help recovery.  Sessions are led by professional artists to support adult well-being through social prescription. They are free of charge, and are by referral/ self referral only. 


Referrals are welcomed from community organisations, social prescribing link workers, charities, community support hubs, or by self-referral.

Links to Thrive: for adults looking for support in mental health and wellbeing 

A programme of free courses and taster workshops for adults offering creative activities, peer support and social connection, delivered in venues across West Berkshire. In collaboration with local GP surgeries and their Social Prescribers we are currently offering referral and self-referral places onto four creative well-being courses in Newbury, Thatcham, Hungerford, Kintbury, Lambourn, Theale, Mortimber and Pangbourne across the summer months.

Singing for Recovery: With a focus on well-being, this session will use vocal warm ups and singing techniques to promote relaxation as well as an opportunity to sing along to songs of all kinds. This class is suitable for anyone wanting to sing in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Art for Well-being: Learn new art techniques in a relaxed, friendly and sociable atmosphere under the guidance of professional artists and illustrators.

Creative Art Journaling: A chance to reflect and explore using mixed media, mindfulness and lots of creative fun techniques to produce a private journal just for you.

Craft and Care: These sessions will work through a variety of craft techniques offering new skills and an opportunity to share progress with others in a supportive and relaxed environment.

Becoming Us: for parents/ careers with babies born in lockdown

A twelve week course supporting parents/carers of babies born in lockdown. Sessions offer support, creative activities and specialised information to promote mental health and wellbeing for parents/carers and their families. Places are free and by referral.
