Dementia family carer training

We are a Twyford-based charity providing free online dementia training, for anyone who is caring for a family member or friend with dementia. The interactive sessions take place online via Zoom in small groups, and includes follow up support and advice. There is also an in-person option for anyone without internet access. We ask participants to buy our accompanying training booklet for £5, but otherwise, the training is completely free. The 8-week course looks at real-life practical examples of how to apply our simple ABC set of skills, to help improve the wellbeing of both the carer and the person with dementia. Our trainer Shirley Pearce has years of experience of working with both carers and those with dementia, in hospitals, care homes and in the community.

Lisa, a family carer who attended our course in March 2022, had this to say:

“The course has really helped me to understand how a person with dementia can think and feel and why certain behaviours are seen. It has helped me to care for my mum more compassionately and be aware from her perspective. I’ve been able to practise being a ‘buddy’ and focus on how she is feeling rather than facts. I’m really hoping to be able to re-build some of her self-esteem and self-worth with this new awareness, and as a result make her life living with dementia a little bit easier. Sincere thanks to Shirley and Lucy for organising and running this invaluable course – it is so appreciated.”
