Mencap Sport is dedicated to increasing opportunities for people with a learning disability to take part in sport and physical activities across England. Funded by Sport England, our mission is to help people with learning disabilities and their communities become more active, happy, and healthy from now until 2027.
We support 9 local communities through our Active Community project, partnering with local people to make their area a better place for physical activity. Our Community Partners work directly in Bradford and District, Derby, Ealing, Greenwich, Nottingham, St Austell and the Clays, St Helens, Thanet, and Worthing.
- How it works: Community Partners bring people together, encourage local leadership, and ensure activities are shaped by the experiences of people with a learning disability.
- Mencap Active Community: We aim to build a nationwide network committed to enhancing opportunities for people with a learning disability to be active and healthy. This includes monthly newsletters, a dedicated webpage, and in-person seminars.
- Workshops and Events: We offer the Learning Disability and Sport Workshop (developed with Special Olympics GB) to make mainstream environments more inclusive, and we organise annual national competitions in swimming and athletics.
- Resources: Download our easy read guide to physical activity and sport, and access home activity packs including ball, chalk, dice, fitness, and walking challenges.
Who can join? Anyone with a learning disability, their families, carers, and local organisations are welcome to get involved. We work with communities, organisations, and individuals to make sport and physical activity accessible and inclusive.
Cost: Most resources and support are free. Some events or workshops may have a fee—please contact us for details.
Get involved: Contact your local Community Partner or email sport@mencap.org.uk for more information. Join our movement to make sport and physical activity accessible for everyone!
