Provide support across a range of services.

Volunteer Cornwall's Stroke Befriending Service offers friendly, supportive companionship to adults in Cornwall who have experienced a stroke. Our trained befrienders provide encouragement and understanding, helping people rebuild confidence and hope after stroke.

How it works:

  • We match individuals with a befriender who understands the challenges of stroke recovery.
  • Befrienders can visit at home, in care homes, in hospital (including specialist stroke units at Camborne Redruth Community Hospital, Bodmin Community Hospital, and Mount Gould in Plymouth), or connect via email, phone, or video call.
  • Support is tailored to each person's needs and preferences, whether face-to-face or remotely.

Who can benefit?

  • Adults (18+) living in Cornwall with a diagnosis of stroke (including those with communication difficulties).
  • Anyone registered with a GP in Cornwall who would like to speak to a befriender.

How to access the service:

  • Referrals are accepted from health and social care professionals, family, friends, charities, community groups, and self-referrals.
  • The person must consent to their details being shared with Volunteer Cornwall.
  • Contact us by phone or email, or complete our referral form online.

Why choose us?

  • Our befrienders are friendly, patient, and often have personal experience of stroke.
  • We offer flexible support options to suit your situation.
  • Our service is free of charge and designed to make a real difference in your recovery and wellbeing.
