The Tobacco Dependency Advisor service, provided by the North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT), is designed to support individuals with severe mental illness (SMI) in reducing or quitting smoking. The service offers a 12-week tailored program that includes tobacco harm reduction assessments, advice on stop smoking medications, and support sessions. The program is flexible and intensive, aiming to reduce smoking prevalence, morbidity, and mortality among service users.
Support Sessions: The advisor conducts both individual and group sessions to provide behavioral support and advice on using NRT and vapes effectively. These sessions are designed to help service users understand the benefits and proper use of these tools.
Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT): The service offers advice and access to various NRT options. This includes patches, gum, lozenges, and other forms of nicotine replacement to help manage withdrawal symptoms and reduce the dependency on tobacco.
Vapes: For service users who wish to switch to vaping, the service provides support and advice on using vapes as a harm reduction tool. This includes guidance on selecting appropriate vaping products and understanding their use.
Tailored Approach: The program recognizes that smoking is a chronic relapsing condition and treats it as a medical issue rather than a lifestyle choice. The support provided is tailored to the individual needs of each service user, ensuring a personalized approach to quitting smoking.
