The Museum of Cambridge

The Museum of Cambridge is an independent museum which shares 300 years of local history. Explore displays of historic objects, learn about those who used them, and get an insight into the everyday life of past generations. There’s something for everyone to enjoy! The Museum shares the stories of the people of Cambridgeshire through a collection of over 20,000 objects. The collection is open five days a week.

The Museum building is located on Castle Hill, at the corner of Castle Street and Northampton Street. There are no parking spaces at the Museum. If you use the Madingley Road Park & Ride service there is a bus stop on Bridge Street, a short walk from the Museum. Unfortunately the building is not wheelchair accessible. Visitors with limited mobility can explore the shop, which is accessible via a street level entrance. There is also a wheelchair accessible toilet on the ground floor. There is an admission fee for visitors aged 13 and over. There are reduced rates for jobseekers, students and those aged 13 – 18.  Admission is free for children aged 12 and under, and for carers who are accompanying a visitor.Visit their website for more details.

The Museum runs a variety of events for both adults and children. Visit their website for details of upcoming events. On their website you can also explore online exhibitions, and a wide range of learning resources.

Volunteer for the Museum! The Museum of Cambridge relies on a wonderful team of volunteers to help them make the history of Cambridge available to the public. They are currently recruiting Front of House volunteers. This fun and vital role involves opening the Museum, welcoming visitors, and selling items in the shop. It provides a great opportunity to learn new skills and build confidence in a customer service role. You will be be supported by a team of staff who are always happy to help, and be part of regular coffee catch-ups, team briefs and communication about all that is going on at the Museum. For more information visit the volunteering page on their website or email Alex Smaridge: volunteer@museumofcambridge.org.uk.
