Breathe Melodies for Mums

Developed in 2017, Breathe Melodies for Mums is a 10-week group singing programme for new mothers experiencing symptoms or with a diagnosis of postnatal depression. Based on research by the Royal College of Music and Imperial College London, Breathe Melodies for Mums follows a logic model that has proven that engaging in weekly singing classes:

- Reduces stress and enhances wellbeing amongst women with PND
- Helps women with or at risk of PND to meet other women in the same situation, reducing social isolation and enhancing social support networks
- Supports mother-infant bonding
- Increases self-esteem and confidence through the acquisition of a new skill
- Provides active singing ‘tools’ for calming babies, helping mothers to feel more in control and capable

Participation is free and music leads choose culturally diverse songs, in a range of different languages, ensuring the programme is accessible and welcoming for all.

Service access criteria: The programme is aimed at new mothers experiencing symptoms of or with a diagnosis of postnatal depression.
