Calm Harm is a free, award-winning app designed to help young people manage or resist the urge to self-harm. Developed by Clinical Psychologist Dr. Nihara Krause MBE in collaboration with young people, Calm Harm uses evidence-based principles from Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT).

The app offers a range of activities to help you 'ride the wave' of self-harm urges, including:

  • Comfort
  • Distract
  • Express Yourself
  • Release
  • Random

It also features a breathing exercise to help you stay mindful, regulate emotions, and reduce tension.

Key features:

  • Immediate activities and techniques to break the cycle of self-harm behaviour
  • Tools to explore underlying triggers
  • Support in building a ‘safety net’ of helpful thoughts, behaviours, and access to supportive people
  • Opportunities to journal and self-reflect
  • Signposting to further help
  • Private, anonymous, and safe

Who is it for? Calm Harm is intended for young people aged 13 and over who want support in managing self-harm urges. Please note, the app is not a substitute for assessment or treatment by a health or mental health professional.

Cost: The app is free in the UK. Charges may apply elsewhere; all proceeds support stem4’s work in providing evidence-based mental health support for young people.
