Telephone relay service

Relay UK lets you make and receive phone calls using text, helping people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have speech difficulties to communicate easily over the phone.

How it works:

  • Download the Relay UK app and link your phone number.
  • Open the app on your smartphone, tablet, or computer.
  • To make a call, dial 18001 followed by the phone number. The app automatically adds 18001 for you.
  • When your call connects, tap 'Join' in the app to start the conversation.
  • A Relay Assistant (RA) can introduce the call and type what the other person says for you to read in the app. You can reply by typing or speaking.
  • End the call when finished and choose to save your conversation if you wish.

Answering calls:

  • Open the app when your phone rings and tap 'Join' to start the conversation.

Extra features:

  • Call 999 by dialing 18000 to connect directly to emergency services via a Relay Assistant.
  • Contact a Relay Assistant before your call if you need help.
  • Save your typed conversations for future reference.
  • Use TextNumber to make it easier for people and businesses to call you without dialing 18002.

Tips for successful calls:

  • Use a headset or hands-free for comfort.
  • Read the conversation in the app to keep up.
  • Speak, listen, or type as needed—make the conversation as natural as possible.
  • The Relay Assistant can help if the conversation gets difficult.

Relay UK is a free service provided by BT and works anywhere in the UK as long as you have an internet connection.
