Free adult cycle training - Exeter

Active Devon offers free cycle training sessions for adults across Devon, designed to help you build cycling skills and confidence in a friendly, supportive environment.

Whether you're a complete beginner, returning to cycling after a break, or looking to improve your confidence for commuting or leisure, our sessions are tailored to suit your needs and abilities. You don't need to own a bike—free bike and helmet loans are available for all sessions.

  • Learn to Ride (Beginners): Held away from roads, these sessions cover helmet fitting, bike safety checks, mounting and balancing, controlling your bike, cornering, braking, and signalling. Ideal for those new to cycling or lacking confidence.
  • Learn to Ride (Female Instructor): All the benefits of the standard session, delivered by a female instructor for those who prefer a women-led space. Slightly longer (1.5 hours) and run in groups of up to six.
  • Cycle Confidence (Mixed Ability): Take place partly off-road and partly on quiet roads and cycle paths. Focus on short journeys, using gears, riding in small groups, and building confidence around traffic.
  • Confidence on Roads (Intermediate): For those ready to cycle on roads, these sessions cover safe road positioning, navigating junctions, and riding confidently among traffic.
  • Workplace Cycle Training: Bespoke sessions delivered at your workplace for you and your colleagues, free of charge. Bikes and helmets can be provided.

All sessions are run in small groups, with a supportive, non-judgmental approach. Instructors tailor each session to your personal goals and challenges.

How to Book: Most sessions are booked online. New dates and locations are added regularly. If you can't find a session near you, check back soon or contact us to discuss bespoke options.

Cost: All adult cycle training sessions are free of charge.

What participants say:

“The instructors are really knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. I was able to talk to them about areas that I found difficult or unsure of such as changing gear and they would tailor the session to include this. I initially was unsure of accessing the cycling sessions as an adult as I thought that I was too old and would be judged. I was not at all judged and actually felt encouraged and supported. I now cycle twice a week at the very least, have increased confidence and I really enjoy it!” – Exeter Resident
