HILs - active aging and meals on wheels – Medication reminders

HILS offers Medication Prompts as part of our Meals on Wheels or Pop-in Visit services. Our friendly team can remind you or your loved one to take medication at the right time, helping you stay safe and independent at home.

Examples of prompts include:

  • “Have you remembered to take your medication today?”
  • “Hello, I have your lunch here – make sure you remember to take your medication today.”
  • “It’s 12 o’clock, have you remembered to take your medication yet?”

This service is free of charge when added to an existing Meals or Pop-in Visit service.

If you are not at home when we visit and cannot be contacted, we will reach out to your family or neighbours to ensure your wellbeing.

How we can help:

  • Remind you to take your medication at the usual time
  • Pass medication to you
  • Open boxes and bottles
  • Fetch medicines from another room
  • Offer a glass of water with tablets
  • Shake liquid medication bottles
  • Let you decide to take it later or not to take it
  • Encourage you to speak to your GP or pharmacist about any concerns
  • Keep a record confirming we have given the prompt

What we cannot do:

  • Pour out liquid medication
  • Pop tablets out of foil or plastic, or cut up tablets
  • Physically handle tablets or medicines
  • Select the medicine for you – you must name it
  • Administer medication in any way
  • Advise which medication to take or explain the dosage
  • Apply creams or give injections
  • Complete a MAR sheet (Medication Administration Record)

To get started: Please ask your health or social care professional to refer you. We need confirmation that you have capacity to manage your medication, so a referral from a professional is required via email: info@hils-uk.org.

For professionals: Email info@hils-uk.org to confirm the client’s capacity and request the service. Download our Guidance Sheet for referrers for FAQs and more details.
