In recent years we have all been reminded of the importance of ‘social connections’ and a ‘sense of belonging’. One of Age UK BRWF’s key projects is its Bromsgrove Men In Sheds group. The concept originates from an Australian project started in the 1990’s, called Men’s Sheds, as a way of tackling loneliness and social isolation in older men where retirement can mean loss of status and contact. The Bromsgrove Shed provides a safe, supportive and friendly setting where people can socialise, learn new and hone existing skills by working alongside each other on their own projects, community projects plus projects that raise funds to support the running of the Shed. An essential aspect of the Shed is however the camaraderie and the peer support. Midway through every session, tools are downed, the kettle goes, a circle of chairs are put out and ‘the-world-is-put-to-rights’.
Please note that Bromsgrove Men In Sheds is currently in the process of moving to a new home! For more details about Bromsgrove Men in Sheds please contact jo.hughes@ageukbrwf.org.uk - Thank you!
