The Kent and Medway Communication and Assistive Technology Service (KMCAT) provides specialist assessment and support for children, young people, and adults with complex communication needs. Our multi-disciplinary teams help clients access technology and equipment that enables them to communicate, participate, and live more independently.
For children and young people:
- Regional specialist assessment service based in Ashford.
- Works in partnership with schools and families.
- Provides communication and assistive technology solutions to support enjoyment, independence, and achievement.
- Specialist multi-disciplinary approach to assessment, intervention, and review.
- May offer equipment loans to explore effectiveness.
- Clinical engineering and technical support, including repair and maintenance of provided equipment.
For adults:
- Specialist team based in Canterbury.
- Supports people requiring alternative and augmentative communication (AAC).
- Includes occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, teachers, therapy assistants, healthcare scientists, and administrators.
- Expertise in electronic assistive technology (EAT), including bespoke solutions.
- Works with other services (e.g., wheelchair and environmental control services) for integrated support.
- Individually programmed software and equipment.
- Ongoing follow-ups, reviews, and training for clients, families, carers, and local therapists.
How to access:
- Referral required from a health, education, or social care professional.
- Eligibility criteria apply (see service criteria).
- Service operates Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
