Scarborough Poetry Appreciation Group

Taking place on the second Monday of the month from 1-2.30pm at Scarborough Library, our Poetry Appreciation Group is a fun, informal group where we get together, discover and share the pleasure of looking at classic and modern poetry. We are a reading group and we read poetry borrowed from the libraries or our staff and volunteer’s collections and discuss them. No pressure to read out loud! We’ll look at the poem and decide if we like the poem, if we understand the poem, if it even is a poem. No prior experience or love of poetry is required!!

Poetry allows individuals to explore thoughts and feelings that may be difficult to articulate in conversation. Writing or reading poetry provides a safe space for people to explore emotions such as grief, anxiety, depression, or anger.

Our poetry groups are for anyone who wants to enjoy the written word and meet up with friendly and welcoming individuals. If you'd like to attend but have any anxieties about walking into the room or getting introduced, just let us know in advance and we can arrange a volunteer to meet you outside and a member to make all introductions to the group!

No charge but donations always welcome. If you register in advance, you'll get a reminder and notice of any changes from sessions (you only need to register once for all the groups across the year.)
