Engage Befriending is dedicated to reducing isolation and loneliness by helping people build positive relationships and connect with their local community.
We recruit, train, and support volunteers to befriend individuals who are isolated or alone, offering regular social contact and companionship. Our service is designed to help people overcome barriers to social connection, improve wellbeing, and feel more supported.
- Befriending: One-to-one support from a trained volunteer, providing regular visits or calls to those who may not have much contact with others.
- Monthly newsletter: A friendly, informative newsletter for service users, keeping everyone updated and engaged.
- Monthly coffee morning: Social gatherings for service users and volunteers to meet, chat, and build new friendships.
Last year, we supported over 112 clients with 58 volunteers, providing 3,432 hours of support. 96% of clients said they felt less isolated since being introduced to their befriender.
Our service is free and open to anyone in Reading who would benefit from more social contact. Referrals can be made by individuals, carers, or professionals. To find out how to refer someone, get involved as a volunteer, or support us through donations, please visit our website or contact us directly.
