Big Rock Pool Challenge Monthly BioBlitz (Falmouth)

Join the ultimate marine wildlife adventure!

The Big Rock Pool Challenge is a vibrant, community-driven initiative that brings together citizen science and coastal exploration to protect and celebrate marine biodiversity. Delivered by The Rock Pool Project and the Marine Biological Association, this project empowers individuals and communities to connect with nature, contribute valuable biodiversity data, and support the health of our coastal ecosystems for future generations.

How does it work?

  • Take part in monthly free local community events called BioBlitz Battles – fun, competitive wildlife discovery sessions open to everyone!
  • Events currently run in Falmouth and Plymouth, with new hubs launching by the end of 2025.
  • Discover amazing species, learn from fellow enthusiasts, and contribute to real scientific research.

Why get involved?

  • BioBlitz Battles are accessible and engaging, fostering a sense of community and connection with nature.
  • Open to all experience levels, these events create an inclusive environment for learning and sharing.
  • Each event offers new challenges and discoveries, ensuring there’s always something exciting to learn.
  • The data you help collect is invaluable for scientific research and conservation efforts.

Health and wellbeing benefits

  • Rock pooling is a low-impact, outdoor activity suitable for people of all abilities.
  • Spending time in "blue spaces" like the ocean can reduce stress and anxiety, supporting mental health.
  • Being part of a community conservation effort fosters pride, accomplishment, and local bonds.

How does it help wildlife?

  • Data collected is shared with national and international platforms to monitor environmental stressors and habitat health.
  • Collaboration with Natural England helps track non-native species and changes in local ecosystems.
