Social Car Scheme

The East Cambs Social Car Scheme offers a friendly, door-to-door transport service for people who are frail, elderly, isolated, or find public transport difficult to use.

Our volunteer drivers can help you get to medical appointments, shopping, social visits, and more. We aim to make travel easier and more comfortable for those who need extra support.

  • How it works: Simply contact our car desk to request a journey. We will try to match you with a volunteer driver, let you know your pick-up time, and keep you updated if anything changes.
  • Costs: You pay the driver 45p per mile from their house to yours, then 50p per mile from your house to your destination and back. There is also a £1 booking fee to cover office overheads. All payments are made in cash to the driver at the end of your journey.
  • Availability: The car desk is open Monday to Thursday, 9:30am–12:30pm. Outside these hours, you can leave a message with your journey details.
  • Volunteer drivers: If you would like to join our team of volunteer drivers, please contact us for an application form. We provide support and guidance throughout the application process, including DBS checks and reference requests.

Our impact: In the last year, our volunteers travelled over 73,000 miles and completed more than 3,700 journeys, giving up thousands of hours to help local people.

Who can use the service? Anyone in East Cambridgeshire who is frail, elderly, isolated, or unable to use public transport is welcome to get in touch.
