Community Shop is the UK's first social supermarket, offering a hand-up, not a hand-out to families facing food insecurity.
As an award-winning social enterprise, Community Shop tackles the root causes of food insecurity with a unique model that supports tens of thousands of families across the UK. Our mission is to build stronger individuals and more confident communities, helping people to live better lives.
- Community Store: Members gain dignified access to deeply discounted food and essentials, including fruit, veg, and bread for only 20p. A weekly shop costs around a third of the retail price, and members choose the items they need, shopping with dignity and agency.
- Community Hub: Profits from the store are reinvested into the Community Hub, which delivers holistic support and development through our 'What If' plan. We empower people to develop their capabilities and create a positive future, providing personal tools to address the causes of food insecurity in a supportive, safe environment.
- Community Kitchen: Each Community Shop features a café where people can connect and learn through food. We offer home-cooked meals for the community, with kids eating free every day, helping restore a sense of community in areas with limited resources.
Our 14 stores support communities in the bottom 10% of the indices of deprivation, unlocking the value from surplus and creating positive impact for people. Surplus products are donated by retailers and manufacturers through Company Shop Group, ensuring no product needlessly goes to waste and supporting thousands of families each year.
Membership is free and open to those who live locally to a Community Shop store and receive a means-tested benefit. If you think you may be eligible, find your nearest Community Shop and contact them directly about membership.
