Charnwood - Chatty Cafe

The Chatty Cafe Scheme was created to tackle social isolation and loneliness by encouraging friendly conversation in public venues. Founded by Alex Hoskyn, the scheme began after she noticed how many people sat alone in cafes, or together but without much to say. Her idea was simple: venues designate a 'Chatty Table' where anyone can sit if they are happy to talk to others.

How it works: Cafes, pubs, restaurants, libraries, hospitals, community centres, church halls, retirement homes, and sporting clubs can all host Chatty Tables. Customers can choose to join these tables to connect and chat, making new friends and building community. The scheme is now active in the UK, Australia, and other countries worldwide.

  • Addresses social isolation and loneliness
  • Open to everyone – just look for a Chatty Table in participating venues
  • Helps people feel more connected, boosts self-worth, and can improve mental and physical health
  • Venues join the scheme and display information about their Chatty Table

Our vision: To make Chatty Tables a normal part of café culture everywhere, helping people feel visible, valued, and part of their community.
