Voluntary Social Car Scheme

The Voluntary Social Car Scheme provides affordable, door-to-door transport for people in Cumberland who have no other means of getting around. Our friendly volunteer drivers can collect you from your home and take you to your chosen destination for a reasonable cost.

Who can use the service? The scheme is open to all members of the community, regardless of age (under 18s must be accompanied by an adult). It's ideal for those who need help getting to:

  • Public transport connections
  • Weekly shopping trips
  • Medical appointments
  • Visiting friends

How it works:

  • Journeys depend on volunteer availability, so flexibility with travel times may be needed.
  • You may be asked to share transport with others.
  • To book, contact us for eligibility and details of your nearest scheme.
  • Please give as much notice as possible when booking.

Where is it available? There are 16 schemes across Cumberland, including areas such as Kirkbride, Bowness on Solway, Aspatria, Bothel, Caldbeck, Dalston, Ireby, Maryport, Allonby, Cockermouth, Workington, Keswick, Whitehaven, Egremont, St Bees, Drigg, Seascale, Gosforth, Bootle, Eskdale, and Millom.

What isn't covered?

  • Concessionary NoWcards cannot be used.
  • Not for travel to day care, school, nursery, or college.
  • For hospital appointments, check eligibility for NHS Patient Transport (North West Ambulance Service: 0800 032 3240).

Cost: Passengers pay a cash fare, and volunteer drivers are reimbursed for fuel expenses. Fares are reasonable and receipts are available.

Want to volunteer? We're always looking for new drivers and coordinators. Expenses are reimbursed, and support is provided.

If there is no car scheme in your area: You may be eligible for the Rural Wheels scheme.
