Growing Out - Therapeutic gardening for mental health

Growing Out London is a free, weekly social and therapeutic gardening programme for adults experiencing mental ill-health, including anxiety, depression, isolation, or other mental health conditions.

Sessions take place in the beautiful gardens of Battersea Park, offering a welcoming space to get active outdoors, connect with others, learn gardening skills, and boost confidence and wellbeing. No prior gardening experience is needed—our friendly Horticulture Practitioner and supportive volunteers guide you every step of the way.

  • Programme Structure: The programme runs for one year, starting with the Pathways stage (6 months), followed by a City & Guilds Level 1 Qualification in Horticulture (6 months).
  • Small Groups: Up to 8 participants per group, ensuring a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
  • Benefits: Improve physical health, reduce anxiety and low mood, increase confidence, learn new skills, gain a recognised qualification, and become more active in the community.

Session Times: Weekly sessions are available from 10am to 3pm on Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday. A women-only group runs on Wednesdays.

  • Pathways: The first stage focuses on building confidence, social interaction, and basic gardening skills.
  • Level 1 Qualification Programme: The second stage is a practical, hands-on course covering topics like planting, sowing seeds, watering, pruning, and more. Participants work through learning units at their own pace, with tutorials and handouts provided.

Eligibility: Adults experiencing mental ill-health who can commit to regular attendance. No gardening experience required.

Cost: Free to attend.

How to join: If you or someone you know would like to attend, call 020 7720 2212 or get in touch via our enquiry form.
