Intentional Peer Support

Intentional Peer Support (IPS) at Sutton Mental Health Foundation offers non-judgmental emotional and practical support for adults (18+) living or working in the London Borough of Sutton who are experiencing mental distress.

Our trained Peer Support workers have direct, lived experience of mental health challenges, allowing them to empathise and support you from a shared perspective. IPS is a mutually supportive, positive process focused on understanding your experiences and helping you set and achieve your own goals.

  • Support is flexible: Typically, you meet with your Peer Support Worker for an hour a week at a mutually agreed time and place. Support usually lasts around 6 months, with regular reviews and possible extensions if needed.
  • Who can benefit? Anyone who feels it would help to talk about their experience of mental distress or mental health services with someone who has 'been there too'. This includes people waiting for traditional support, seeking extra emotional support, or needing help after discharge from care.
  • Practical help: IPS is not just about talking; Peer Support workers can also offer practical support tailored to your needs.

How to access: You can self-refer using our online form, or a GP, health professional, or carer can refer you. If you have any questions or issues with the referral forms, please email admin@smhf.org.uk or call 020 8770 0172.

Location: Support is provided in-person at a mutually agreed location in Sutton, including our base at Belmont Connect.
