Volunteer - Intentional Peer Support Volunteer

Intentional Peer Support (IPS) at Sutton Mental Health Foundation offers non-judgmental emotional support for adults (18+) living or working in the London Borough of Sutton who are experiencing mental distress. This service is a lifeline for those seeking understanding and connection from people who have lived experience of mental health challenges.

How does IPS work? Our trained Peer Support workers use their own experiences to empathise and support you. We focus on what has happened, not what's 'wrong', and create a safe space for you to share your story and feel truly listened to. Together, you and your Peer Support worker will agree on shared goals, keeping the focus on where you want to be.

Who can benefit? IPS is for anyone who feels it would help to talk about their experiences of mental distress or mental health services with someone who understands. Whether you're waiting for traditional support, need extra emotional support, or are seeking help after discharge from care, we're here for you.

  • Meetings are typically one hour per week at a mutually agreed time and place.
  • Support usually lasts around 6 months, with reviews every three months and possible extensions if needed.
  • We offer both practical and emotional support, tailored to your needs.
