Step Forward (Allerdale)

Step Forward is a supported employment and volunteering service for individuals with severe and enduring mental health experiences, delivered by Cumbria CVS in partnership with the NHS. Our service is designed to help people move forward into volunteering or paid employment, supporting long-term mental health management and recovery.

Who is it for? We support adults living with severe mental health experiences in the North Cumbria area (Carlisle, Eden, Allerdale, and Copeland). Our approach is holistic, strengths-based, person-centred, and needs-led, always guided by the individual’s unique circumstances and aspirations.

What do we offer?

  • Up to 9 months of tailored support using a 3-step model: Plan, Prepare, and Practice.
  • Help accessing meaningful services, such as talk therapies, grief support, and confidence building.
  • 3 months of in-work or in-volunteering support to help you retain and thrive in your placement.
  • Employer engagement to help you navigate conversations and succeed in your role.
  • Additional resources, including Workplace Wellbeing Training, a Library of Lived Experience, Wellbeing Advice, Explainer Videos, Conflict Resolution, Trauma-Informed Awareness Training, and more.

How does it work? We work alongside you to create a personalised plan, prepare for your next steps, and practice new skills. Our team is here to help you access the right opportunities and support, whether you want to self-refer or refer someone else.

Cost: This service is free to eligible individuals, funded by the NHS North East & North Cumbria Integrated Care Board.

Service access criteria: Individual’s living with SMHE in Allerdale, Carlisle ,Copeland or Eden who are currently: Not working but looking to take those first steps back into employment or volunteering Looking for training to help them prepare for when they feel ready to start work In employment but have spare time and have been considering giving back through volunteering
