B&D Works - Barking and Dagenham Job Shop

The B&D Works Job Shop is a free service to help you get a job, improve your skills and widen your job and career options.

Support we offer:
- information, advice and guidance on a 1-1 basis and via virtual sessions
- support in removing barriers to employment e.g. childcare responsibilities
- education and training assessments and referral to relevant provision
- setting short and long-term employment focussed goals
- CV and covering letter reparation
- job application form filling and Personal Statement guidance
- interview techniques / mock interviews
- use of computers with Internet access for job searching - appointment based only
- telephone, photocopying and scanning facilities - appointment based only
- dedicated construction team
- dedicated support for council tenants
- dedicated employer engagement team, working with local employers to provide residents with local opportunities 
- in-work support package

We are located in Dagenham Library and the Barking Learning Centre.

To register with a general Job Broker or a Construction Broker, you must meet the following eligibility criteria:

General Brokerage:

  • Be over 16 years old
  • Have the Right to Work in the UK
  • Living within Barking and Dagenham (unless placed in temporary accommodation by LBBD outside of the borough)
  • Studying less than 16 hours
  • Must have Recourse to Public Funds (unless you have a refugee or asylum status)
  • Must not be receiving support from another employment support service such as Maximus

Construction Brokerage:

  • Be over 16 years old
  • Looking for work in Construction industry
  • Must the have Right to Work in the UK
  • Must be living Barking & Dagenham (unless placed in temporary accommodation by LBBD outside of the borough)
  • Cannot have restrictions on the hours and type of work on status - e.g. Student Visa or Skilled Worker Visa

As part of the registration process, we will ask to see the following documents:

  • Proof of right to work in the UK and recourse to public funds (for general brokerage) – Passport & Right to Work document, if applicable – Visa/Biometric Card - must have 6+ months remaining / Share Code or UK Birth Certificate or Driving Licence if born in the UK
  • Proof of Barking and Dagenham Borough residency – letter dated with the last 3 months (e.g. bank statement, utility bill, council tax)
  • Proof of National Insurance Number – e.g. NI Card, Tax Record, P60, Payslip, P45, Benefits documentation
