Need help with small repairs or adaptations at home? The Age UK Berkshire Handyperson Service is here to support older people, families, carers, and professionals in West Berkshire, Reading, Wokingham, and Bracknell Forest.
Our trained and experienced handyperson team can carry out a wide range of small household repairs and minor adaptations, including:
- Fitting window and door locks, and other security items
- Installing smoke and CO2 detectors
- Changing light bulbs and small electrical fittings
- Minor plumbing works
- Fitting grab rails and hand rails (excluding stair rails)
- Installing key safes and intercoms
- Draught proofing windows and doors
- Putting up curtain poles and blinds
- Other minor repairs (please ask for details)
We cannot undertake:
- Major electrical work
- Gas work requiring a Gas-Safe registered technician
- High-up or high-level work
- Painting and decorating
- Heavy machinery work (e.g. chainsaws)
- Gardening
For jobs we can't do, we can suggest local traders (though we do not make recommendations).
All our handypeople are DBS checked, fully referenced, insured, and employed by Age UK Berkshire, giving you peace of mind.
Cost: £25 per hour, plus the cost of materials. If you are unable to pay, please discuss your situation with us. Some works referred by the council or hospital (for security, reducing hospital stays, or enabling hospital discharge) are currently provided free of charge.

Chargeable service if self referred, can be free of charge if referred by Wokingham Borough Council.
