Need small repairs or minor adaptations at home to help you stay safe and independent? Age UK Berkshire’s Handyperson service can help with practical jobs around your home across West Berkshire, Reading, Wokingham and Bracknell Forest.
The trained and experienced handyperson team can carry out small household repairs and minor adaptations, including window and door locks and other security items, smoke and CO2 detectors, light bulbs and small electrical fittings, minor plumbing works, grab rails and hand rails (excluding stair rails), key safes and intercoms, draught proofing, curtain poles and blinds, and other minor repairs (please ask for details).
Some jobs are not included, such as major electrical work, gas work requiring a Gas-Safe registered technician, high-up work, painting and decorating, heavy machinery work (for example chainsaws), and gardening. For work they cannot do, they may be able to suggest one or more local traders, although they do not make recommendations.
You may find this helpful if you are an older person, or you support an older person, and you need help with small repairs or home safety adaptations.
How to access: get in touch to discuss what you need and whether your area is covered. Call 0118 959 4242. You can also email handyperson@ageukberkshire.org.uk (the page also lists info@ageukberkshire.org.uk).
Cost: £25 per hour, plus the cost of materials. If you genuinely cannot pay, you are asked to discuss this with the team. Works provided via a referral from the council or hospital, specifically to assist in security, reduce hospital inpatient stays or to enable a quick discharge from hospital, are currently provided free of charge.
