Help with walking/ Wheelchair service

If you are finding it difficult to walk around, there are several services available in Barking and Dagenham to help you stay mobile and independent. Whether you need a walking stick, frame, or wheelchair, your doctor can advise you on the best options for your needs.

Wheelchair Service: This service provides professional assessment of your wheelchair needs. If you qualify, you will receive equipment and access to a repair service.

  • Referral required from a doctor, consultant, occupational therapist, or other health professional.

Dial-a-Wheelchair: Available for residents of Barking, Dagenham, and Havering, this service offers:

  • Short term loan: Up to three months with a referral from a health professional. Ideal for recovery after injury or surgery.
  • Occasional loan: Self-referral available. Wheelchairs can be delivered free to your door for up to three consecutive days a week, or collected with just half an hour's notice. Occasional loans can last up to two weeks for holidays or family visits. If taking a wheelchair abroad, a £250 deposit is required (refundable upon return).

Important: Dial-a-Wheelchair is not available to people living in nursing, residential, or private care homes.
