The Memory Advice Service from Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland offers free, tailored information and support for anyone worried about their memory, as well as their families and carers.
Our trained Memory Advisors are here to listen to your concerns and help you explore strategies to support living well with memory difficulties. We focus on your strengths and maintaining independence, providing practical advice and emotional reassurance.
- Personalised information about common causes of memory loss and health conditions.
- Guidance on next steps, including memory strategies and making GP appointments for assessments.
- Support with technology and memory aids to help you stay safe and independent at home.
- Referrals to other organisations (with your consent) for additional support.
- Free benefits checks to ensure you receive all entitlements, including disability benefits and carers allowance.
- Planning ahead for the future, including information about Lasting Power of Attorney.
We also offer Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) sessions—group activities designed to maintain memory and mental functioning in a fun, supportive environment. These groups encourage new friendships and include discussions, reminiscence, word games, quizzes, physical activities, and creative or musical activities. Carers' groups run alongside CST to ensure families also receive support.
Who can access the service? This service is ideal for people referred to or accessing the NHS Memory Assessment Service, including those waiting for assessment, diagnosis, or living with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). It is also suitable for anyone concerned about their memory, even if they have not yet spoken to their GP. Carers and supporters of people with memory difficulties are welcome.
How to access: Support is available over the phone, face to face, or online. You must be over 18 and live in Leicester city or Leicestershire, or be registered with a GP in these areas.
Cost: All services are free of charge.
Many people tell us they feel reassured after speaking to our advisors, knowing someone has listened and helped them plan for the future.
