Communitas is a joyful series of pop-up singing workshops and outdoor performances, celebrating togetherness and creativity in wild places across the North of England. Led by Dave Camlin with Angie Power and special guests, the project brought people together in Summer 2021 to reconnect through music after social distancing restrictions eased.
What we offered:
- All-day singing workshops in beautiful outdoor locations, open to everyone — no experience necessary! Songs were taught by ear in the 'natural voice' tradition, with a focus on fun and participation.
- Merry Neets: Evenings of shared creativity inspired by the Cumbrian tradition, where anyone could join in with songs, stories, poems, dances, or jokes around a chosen theme.
- Off the Grid Musical Picnics: Free, informal gatherings for picnics, communal singing, and impromptu performances in nature.
How it worked:
- Workshops and events were held outdoors in various wild locations across the North of England.
- Everyone was welcome — no auditions or previous singing experience required.
- Events were designed to be safe and inclusive, with a safety questionnaire for all participants and clear expectations for shared responsibility.
- Repertoire was chosen collectively, and many songs were easy to join in with. A downloadable songbook was available for participants.
Why join?
- Experience moments of collective joy and connection in nature.
- Meet like-minded people and enjoy singing together in a relaxed, supportive environment.
- Take part in unique outdoor performances and creative celebrations.
Cost: Most events, including musical picnics, were free to attend.
