The Adult Sensory Support Team provides specialist advice and support for adults in County Durham who experience poor eyesight, hearing loss, or dual sensory loss.
Our person-centred approach helps you overcome daily obstacles related to sensory loss, whether you are blind, partially sighted, deaf, deafened, or hard of hearing. We work with you to reduce the impact of sensory loss on your life, focusing on your needs and wishes through specialist assessment and care planning.
- Support for hearing impairment: Our social workers have special communication skills and can help you register as deaf or hard of hearing, adapt to changes in daily living, and access specialist equipment and home adaptations. We offer advice on welfare rights and disability benefits, help with paperwork, connect you to local support groups, and provide advocacy services when needed. We also support you with issues related to caring for children, housing, mental health, employment, and accessing sign language interpreters or lipspeakers.
- Support for sight loss: We work closely with local voluntary organisations and council services to offer advice and support for blind and partially sighted people. Our team can help with mobility (including sighted guiding techniques, safer ways to cross roads, public transport, and building familiarisation), daily living skills (personal care, safe meal preparation, identifying money or clothing, housework, and gardening), and communication (using the telephone, magnifiers, lighting, handwriting, computers, and tactile languages like Braille).
We collaborate with the NHS and voluntary organisations to ensure you receive the care and support you need. Contact us for more information or to access our services.
