Register a death

If you need to register a death that occurred in the London Borough of Havering, we are here to guide you through the process with care and professionalism.

Key steps:

  • The death must have taken place in Havering and be registered within 5 days of the Medical Examiner contacting you, unless referred to the Coroner.
  • Registration is by appointment only at one of our offices. We do not offer walk-in services.
  • Death certificates cost £12.50 each and must be paid for in advance when booking your appointment. Certificates are provided at the end of your appointment.

What to expect at your appointment:

  • The appointment lasts about 40 minutes.
  • You will need to provide details about the person who has passed away, including their full name, any previous names, date and place of birth, last address, occupation, and details of a surviving or late spouse or civil partner.
  • Information about State Pension or other benefits will also be requested.

  • Havering Town Hall, Main Road, Romford, RM1 3BB (accessible office)

After your appointment:

  • The Green Form (Certificate for Burial or Cremation) will be sent electronically to your Funeral Director and Crematorium/Cemetery.
  • If you need additional copies of the death certificate in the future, you can apply online.
  • Our Tell Us Once service can notify government departments and organisations of the death. You will receive a unique reference number and instructions after your appointment.

Booking and access:

  • Book your appointment online. Please have your debit or credit card ready (American Express not accepted).
  • After booking, you will receive an email with appointment details. If you provide a mobile number, you will also receive text reminders.
  • Only two people can attend the appointment.

Weekend on-call service: We take calls on Sundays and bank holidays from 9am to 12noon. The Medical Examiner will advise when the Medical Cause of Death Certificate has been sent. For weekend queries, call 01708 433999.
