Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy Services from Luton Borough Council provide equipment and home adaptations to help people who are frail through old age, people with disabilities, and their carers. Our aim is to help people remain living independently in their own homes for as long as possible.

We offer free equipment loans and minor home adaptations to eligible individuals, helping you manage daily activities and maintain independence. Our occupational therapists will assess your needs and recommend the best solutions for you.

  • Who can benefit?
People who are frail through old age, people with disabilities, those being discharged from hospital, and carers.
  • Examples of equipment:
Grab rails, raised toilet seats, walking frames, perching stools, pick up and reaching aids.
  • Examples of major adaptations:
Widening doorways, installing ramps or stairlifts, creating disabled access to showers, lowering kitchen work surfaces.

How to access:
If you find daily living difficult and believe you need help, complete the Occupational Therapy Contact Form or speak to your GP for a referral. A trained professional will assess your eligibility for support.

Cost:
If you are eligible for care and assessed as needing equipment or minor adaptations, there is no charge. For major adaptations, costs depend on your circumstances and may be covered by a Disabled Facilities Grant (up to £30,000, means-tested). Council tenants do not pay for work done.

Returning equipment:
Contact Medequip at 0333 091 7763 or email [email protected]. You can also return equipment directly to the Bedford Service Centre Depot (Medequip Hammond Road Elm Farm Industrial Estate Bedford MK41 0UD, open 8am–5pm Mon–Fri).
