Volunteering at Community Furniture Stores

Community Furniture Store Scarborough, part of a group of three charities across North Yorkshire, is dedicated to helping it's local community. The store is open to everyone to buy good quality pre-owned furniture at affordable prices. People donate their items, which we then clean, repair and put out for sale, offering a discount to those who need additional financial support.

We are passionate about helping people in need and reusing anything we can. We aim to put pre-owned donated furniture back into circulation to reduce waste and protect the environment.

Additionally, we provide opportunities to learn new skills and be part of a community through our workshops and Volunteering Programme.

We offer a range of voluntary roles, including:

  • Customer Service & Admin
  • Warehouse Store Support
  • Van Support
  • Store Presentation
  • Store Merchandising

Each of these roles comes with different tasks and responsibilities, supporting the team in the store. As well as being invaluable to us by increasing our operational capacity, we want volunteering to be a positive and valuable experience for volunteers. We provide complete training, support, equipment and mentorship for all volunteers, including skills development, a focus employability if wanted, references for future roles, and welfare support. We aim to be welcoming, accommodating and flexible to people from all walks of life, no matter what skills, background or experience they have.

At our Scarborough store we also welcome volunteers to our Carpentry Workshop where volunteers can learn a range of skills including the use of power and hand tools, to repair, restore, and upcycle donated furniture. Applications are currently closed until January 2025, however we look forward to welcoming new volunteers to the workshop when we open them again.

We aim to create a supportive, beneficial and enjoyable space for all volunteers. They do not need any special skills or knowledge, and we are happy to make any adjustments necessary.
