Enable Learning Disabilities Weight Management Service

A new specialist weight management programme for adults with learning disabilities delivered across the Royal Borough of Greenwich and the London Boroughs of Bexley and Bromley

Delivered by Enable in partnership with the three boroughs, the Enable Learning Disabilities Weight Management Service aims to reduce health inequalities by promoting healthier lifestyles, and providing a supportive, accessible, and inclusive environment for participants to achieve their weight management goals and improve their overall wellbeing.

This is an evidence based, accessible, lifestyle multicomponent service for adults aged 18 years and over with a learning disability across the three boroughs. The service is aimed at adults with BMI ≥30kg/m2 or BMI ≥27.5 kg/m2 for those from a minority ethnic group.

This programme is designed to support adults with learning disabilities make positive and sustainable changes to their diet and lifestyle. The service will provide tailored, evidence-based interventions, including nutrition education, physical activity sessions, and behaviour change support. The programme will also engage carers to ensure long-term sustainable outcomes for service users.

Participants will receive tailored support to:

  • Achieve and maintain a healthier weight
  • Improve their understanding of nutrition and healthier eating habits
  • Increase physical activity in a way that suits their abilities and preferences
  • Access ongoing support in a safe, inclusive, and engaging setting

Service access criteria:

● Aged 18 years old and over

● A mild or moderate learning disability

● Resident of, or registered with a General Practitioner in, Bexley, Bromley or Greenwich

● Able to attend a programme either alone or supported by a carer or support worker

● BMI ≥30kg/m2 or BMI≥27.5kg/m2 if from minority ethnic groups (calculate BMI here)

 

Exclusion Criteria

● Under 18 years old

● Pregnant

● Have a history of an eating disorder

● Anyone who does not meet the eligibility criteria set out above
