Discover the Wildlife & Wellbeing Trail at Barking Riverside!
Embark on a 5km journey through a unique ecosystem, exploring the endangered, protected, and often hidden wildlife of Barking Riverside. The trail features permanent signage and a downloadable map to guide you through fascinating areas such as Oystercatcher Park and the Thames Foreshore, where you might spot seals basking on the shoreline and learn about the area's rich history as a trade and transport route for London.
Highlights of the Trail:
- Encounter endangered water voles in their specially created habitat at Oystercatcher Park.
- Observe bats, including the common pipistrelle, as they travel along the park at dusk.
- Enjoy rich birdlife at Barking Riverside’s jetty, including the Migrant Common Tern, Shelduck, and rare Yellow-Legged Gull.
- Spot protected reptiles like Grass Snakes and Adders, safely relocated across Barking Riverside.
- Marvel at invertebrates such as butterflies, bees, and the impressive Emperor Dragonfly in the grasslands and foreshore.
- Look out for marine mammals like Harbour and Grey Seals along the Thames Foreshore.
Immersive Sound Artworks: Listen to 'Mud' and 'Marsh', two sound pieces created by artist Joseph June Bond and local residents, inspired by the sounds and stories of Barking Riverside’s past and present.
