The Museum of Cambridge

The Museum of Cambridge is a unique cultural institution dedicated to sharing the extraordinary stories of everyday people from Cambridge and Cambridgeshire. Housed in the Grade II-listed 17th century White Horse Inn, the museum has been welcoming visitors since 1936.

Explore over 300 years of local history and heritage through our diverse collections, which include objects related to daily life, customs, and traditions of the area. Our exhibits help visitors reflect on the past, appreciate the makers and users of each object, and connect these stories to the present day.

We are committed to collecting and recording stories from all communities, reviving the ethos of folklorist Enid Porter, our longest-serving curator. Through ongoing projects, we explore more recent and diverse heritage, ensuring the museum remains relevant and inclusive.

Our building is a rare and important example of a historic timber-framed coaching inn, with winding staircases and uneven floors that make every visit memorable. The museum’s origins date back to a 1933 exhibition by the Cambridgeshire Federation of Women’s Institute, which inspired the creation of a permanent social history collection.

Whether you are a local resident, a family, a school group, or a visitor to Cambridge, the Museum of Cambridge offers something for everyone. Discover the stories, objects, and people that have shaped the city and county over centuries.
