Independent Domestic Violence Advocate (IDVA) Support

Rising Sun’s Independent Domestic Violence Advocates (IDVAs) offer specialist, confidential support to adults at high risk of harm from domestic abuse in Canterbury, Ashford, and Folkestone & Hythe in Kent.

Our IDVAs are trained professionals who are independent from the police and courts, ensuring your safety and wellbeing are always at the heart of our service. We help you understand your rights, explore your options, and develop a personalised safety plan for you and your children.

  • Practical and emotional support from your first report to the police or other agencies, through leaving an abusive relationship, securing housing, and navigating the court process.
  • Advocacy with agencies such as police, refuge, health services, schools, and victim support to ensure your voice is heard.
  • Guidance on criminal and civil remedies and support through prosecution, including explaining legal jargon and processes.
  • Help with multi-agency risk assessment conferences (MARAC) to coordinate safety planning with local agencies.
  • Referrals to further support such as Outreach Service, Group Programmes, Support Café, or Victim Support if needed.

Support is free of charge for victim-survivors aged 16+ who are considered high risk. You can be referred by a professional, friends, family, or self-refer. Most support is provided over the phone, with safe in-person meetings available at community spaces or our weekly One Stop Shop.

We are here to help you rebuild your life and move towards safety, at your own pace.
