Online Course: Supporting a Child Struggling with Mental Health

Are you a parent supporting a child struggling with their mental health? The Youth Mental Health Foundation offers a free online video course designed to help you support your child’s recovery and wellbeing.

The Horizon Plan is created by parents, for parents, and is based on lived experience and expert guidance. The course is split into two modules:

  • Module 1: Foundation – Learn how to ‘steady the ship’ and build a supportive foundation for your child’s healing. Hear directly from young people about what helps most in a crisis.
  • Module 2: Get Your Own Oxygen Mask On First – Discover strategies to strengthen your own emotional wellbeing, so you can be the calm, effective support your child needs.

Each module comes with downloadable workbooks, thoughtfully designed to help you put strategies into practice at home.

What’s included:

  • Video lessons and practical exercises
  • Downloadable workbooks
  • Access to a supportive Facebook parent community (‘Self-Harm & Mental Health Parents’)

Who is this for? Parents and carers of children or teens experiencing mental health challenges, including self-harm, anxiety, and low mood. No prior experience or training is needed.

How to access: Start the course now for free. All resources are available online, and you can join the parent community for ongoing support.

Cost: Free of charge.

Additional support: If you prefer live, group-based learning, check out our Power2Parent groups (available online via Zoom and in-person in South Devon).

Healthcare professionals recognise the huge contribution an informed parent can make to a child’s recovery. This course is recommended by CAMHS, doctors, counsellors, and therapists.
