Housing Advice for Visually Impaired

Empowering people with vision impairment in Surrey to live independently and confidently.

Sight for Surrey’s Assessment and Rehabilitation service is delivered by a team of skilled Sensory Specialist Workers, all trained to at least diploma level in Rehabilitation Studies and accredited in assessment for people with combined sight and hearing loss. Our team brings over 20 years of experience, offering a wealth of knowledge and expertise to support you.

Who can access this service?

  • Anyone living in Surrey with a serious sight problem or combined sight and hearing loss.
  • No need to be formally registered as having a vision impairment.
  • Support is also available for friends and families of people with vision impairment.

How we help:

  • Information and advice tailored to your needs.
  • Professional assessment of your individual situation.
  • Advice on everyday living skills to help you manage at home.
  • Access to equipment to support independence (some items may be available on free loan or via grants).
  • Mobility training to help you get about safely.
  • Communication skills training.
  • An opportunity to talk through the effects of sight loss and combined sight and hearing loss with highly trained staff.

Rehabilitation Support Workers are available across Surrey, providing ongoing support and acting as a vital link to other services. Six months after receiving services from our Assessment and Rehabilitation Team, a worker will contact you to offer further support and help maintain your independence and wellbeing.

Cost: There is no charge for specialist assessment or rehabilitation for those who meet Surrey County Council’s eligibility criteria. Equipment can be purchased from our Resource Centre, and impartial advice is always free. In some cases, equipment may be issued on free loan, and applications for grants for specialist equipment are considered.
