Over the next few months, the Phoenix Art Club will be organising a series of free taster/ introductory art and craft training modules open to any adults in the local community. These will be delivered at the Club’s premises in Phoenix Court, Cleator Moor, normally on a weekday evening lasting up to 3 hours and will be tutor led.
The modules will cover one of the following art or craft topics; basic water colours; introduction to crochet; introduction to candle craft; sketching skills; pastels and water colours; introduction to acrylics and each will be repeated once.
The project will encourage individuals, especially those socially excluded or financially constrained to be able to undertake worthwhile activities in a welcoming social environment that will benefit their overall wellbeing. In addition, the project will offer improved accessibility for the local community to experience opportunities in the arts and crafts.
The project will also enable the Club to promote and support mental wellbeing through nature based activities under the Green Social Prescribing Agenda e.g. providing some of the introductory taster sessions at local green areas such as Longlands Lake, Hen Beck etc.
Attendance at the modules will be free and all participants will be provided with the basic equipment and materials to ensure active participation. No previous experience is required, and any level of ability is welcome.
The Club’s aim in undertaking this project is twofold; firstly to increase its membership and thereby ensure its ongoing sustainability and secondly that the local community will continue to have access to an art and craft facility and opportunities.
The Club is dependent upon membership fees for its revenue income but through the project can offer subsidised fees for a number of economically inactive and otherwise disadvantaged individuals.
The project began on the 8th March 2023 with the craft topic, Introduction to Candle Craft. The rest of the programme will roll out at monthly intervals over the year. Details of all the remaining modules will be advertised in the local press and on social media.
Advanced telephone booking for all modules is essential.
