Age UK Berkshire's Handyperson Service offers a reliable and friendly way to get small household repairs and minor adaptations done, helping you stay safe, secure, and independent in your own home.
What we can help with:
- Fitting window and door locks, keysafes, and other security items
- Installing smoke and CO2 detectors
- Changing light bulbs and replacing small electrical fittings
- Replacing tap washers and minor plumbing works
- Fitting grabrails and handrails
- Draughtproofing windows and doors
- Fitting phone extensions and intercoms
- Carrying out a range of other minor repairs – just ask us for details!
What we can't do: Major electrical or gas work, high-level jobs, painting and decorating, heavy machinery, or gardening. However, we can suggest local traders for these tasks.
All our Handyperson team members are fully referenced, insured, and have Disclosure & Barring Checks (DBS). We assess every job for safety and do our best to meet your individual needs.
How does it work?
- Some works (for security, hospital avoidance, or quick discharge) are free for Wokingham residents if referred by the council or hospital.
- For other areas (West Berkshire, Reading, Wokingham, Bracknell Forest), the service is £25 per hour plus materials.
- If you are unable to pay, please discuss your situation with us – we may be able to help.
Who can refer? Older people, families, carers, social workers, occupational therapists, GPs, and hospital staff can all make referrals.
Where is the service available? Reading, Wokingham, Bracknell Forest, and West Berkshire.
