Memory service (Barnsley)

The Barnsley Memory Service provides a single point of access for assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of people with memory problems, in line with the NHS national dementia strategy.

Based at Wombwell Clinic, our service operates Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. We work closely with GPs, Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and other health professionals to carry out detailed assessments and establish the underlying causes of memory problems.

If a diagnosis of dementia is made, we offer treatment and interventions to help individuals and their carers manage the condition as effectively as possible, supporting choice and independence throughout the process.

Why choose us?

  • All staff are highly qualified, skilled, and experienced in dementia care and treatment.
  • We treat everyone with dignity and respect, involving people and carers in all decisions about care and treatment.
  • 99% of people seen by our service would recommend us to family and friends.
  • 100% felt their privacy and dignity was maintained.
  • Re-accredited by the Royal College of Psychiatrists for assessment, diagnosis, and psychosocial interventions for people with dementia.
  • Shortlisted for the Dementia Care category of the Patient Safety and Care Awards.

Support offered includes:

  • Full memory assessment leading to diagnosis and possible treatment
  • Post-diagnostic support and signposting (including information about Alzheimer’s Society and Barnsley Independent Alzheimer’s & Dementia Support)
  • Dementia advisors
  • Cognitive stimulation therapy (with a carer group running alongside)

  • Memory diary/portrait of a life
